Bill to Prevent You Knowing What is in Your Food-

Posted: July 16, 2015 in Uncategorized

Regardless of whether you care about GMO’s being in your food or not, a lot of people want to know. There is a bill moving in the US Congress that would effectively quash all efforts to denote on the label whether or not GMO’s may be in a given product. This is in a nation that labels peanut butter with a warning that the product contains peanuts!

If you believe that people should have a right to intelligently choose what they want to eat themselves and feed to their families, this bill needs to die. Below is a notice with some more information. It lists Jason Smith as the contact…Nevermind that he has been given lots of financial help from Monsanto, he is supposed to represent this district, not corporate interests. It can’t hurt to let him know your thoughts on the bill. If he is not your Congressman, just let your Congressman know what you think. Here’s the notice:

The bill that would block state efforts to label genetically engineered foods (GMOs) just passed out of the House Agriculture Committee — and now it’s on to a full vote in the House. 1

This is Monsanto’s Dream Bill. We’re calling it the DARK Act (Denying Americans the Right to Know), because that’s exactly what this is about. Monsanto wants to keep us in the dark about what we’re eating because they’re worried that GMO labels will allow consumers to make more informed choices about what they buy at the grocery store. You know there’s something wrong when companies don’t want you to know what’s in their products.

Can you make a quick call to tell Rep. Jason Smith to vote NO on H.R. 1599?  Calls are the fastest, most effective way to get your message through to your member of Congress.

  1. Call 866-772-3843 and you’ll be connected to a staffer in Rep. Smith’s office.
  2. Simply tell the staffer your name, where you’re from and say:

I’m a constituent and I care about my right to know what’s in the food I eat. I want my representative to vote NO on H.R. 1599 and to support legislation to require mandatory GMO labeling (H.R. 913).

  3. Forward this message on to your friends. The phone number will route callers to the correct office, even if they don’t live in the same Congressional district as you do.

This terrible bill would allow companies that make and use GMOs to continue to keep quiet about them, and states that have already passed GMO labeling laws could be prevented from implementing their laws to require labels.

This is about consumer choice. Despite Monsanto’s favorite talking points, there is no scientific consensus about the safety of genetically engineered crops,2 and the World Health Organization recently asserted that the harsh pesticide that most GMO crops are engineered to withstand is a “probable human carcinogen.”3 We all deserve the right to know what’s in the food we eat and feed our families.

In fact, over 90% of Americans support the labeling of GMOs.4 But since H.R. 1599 was introduced, the Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA), an industry group that represents corporations like Monsanto, Nestlé and Dow, has been lobbying hard to move this bill forward. Unless we weigh in, our members of Congress could side with these special interests over their constituents.

Call 866-772-3843 and tell Rep. Smith you want GMO labels — vote NO on H.R. 1599!
