HB1490 Continues In The Senate Today
HB1490 Common Core Legislation
The legislature has finally settled on the vehicle for our issues with Common Core and the SBAC assessments. HB1490 Senate Floor Substitute was taken up by the Senate yesterday. Senator Ed Emery is leading this bill on the floor. Senator Sifton delayed progress on the bill in a misguided attempt to push the House to take up the Student Transfer bill (SB493). Debate finally ended after 8:00 last night when the bill was laid over.
The bill will be brought up again today and (we hope) be voted out of the Senate. You can listen to the debate live by going to the Senate page at 10:00 a.m. when they reconvene and clicking on the Senate Live Debate box in the upper right corner.
As you may know, this is the part of the legislative process where most of the “politicking” occurs. We have done our best to educate the legislators on the real issues with common core. It is up to them to work through the process to get something passed.
Whatever comes out of the legislature this year will not cure all our education ills, but it will be a phenomenal step forward in returning local control of education. We, in our local communities, will be called upon to pick up the mantle and provide the eternal vigilance that is necessary to keep it there.
